Leave the familiar for a while
Let your senses and body stretch out
Leave the familiar for a while
Change rooms in your mind for a day
Greet yourself
In your thousand other forms
As you mount the hidden tide and travel back home

Some thoughts about Ayurveda by Sheila Hennessy ~ 3 Om Ayurvedic Practitioner
I take an integral approach to understanding our body's systems. Chinese medicine and acupuncture are good adjuncts to Ayurvedic and Marma point techniques. I also draw on my knowledge of homeopathic remedies, cell salts and other vibrational remedies. I believe that in this day and age, with GMO and compromised water and air, we need all the help we can get to keep our bodies healthy and our minds sharp. I think that when we rely solely on western medicine, or acupuncture, or Ayurveda, we are limiting the potential healing possibilities. I am fascinated with the inter-relatedness of these healing modalities. It is as if the modalities are able to collaborate with one another to provide us with what we call "optimal health". This is an excellent time to live on the planet for the sharing of medicinal remedies, and modalities.
Ayurveda has a unique baseline of understanding energy in the body. Energy that is cold, dry, creative and erratic is attributed to a Vata nature. Energy that is warm, focused and unrelenting is attributed to a Pitta (PITHA), a fiery nature. Energy that is slow to start, sentimental and heavy is attributed to Kapha (KAA FA) nature. This is a very simple summary of Doshas, one of many classical Ayurvedic observational tools. Be careful here. Just like when someone asks you your astrological sign, if you know anything about astrology, you will giggle at the absurdity of that question. Astrology is a combination snap shot picture chart of 10 planets of the celestial heavens at the time of your birth that are moving around in a continually moving astrologically changing celestial world...(If you want to know about compatibility, and/or how they present in the outside world, you want to ask that person what planet rules their Moon.) Ayurveda is equally complex.
This is also the dilemma of trying to analyze someone's dosha. Some people ask me "What is my dosha?" As if it were some very apparent hat that we all wear. This is not the question to ask, as it is fraught with misunderstanding. Determining your dosha starts with a multiple choice test of 150 questions, and even then, you have to pray and rely on the fact that the person taking the test knows her or himself well enough to answer the questions accurately (and honestly). Your dosha is written in a “V P K " configuration. The number following the V, P, K shows how high or how low this energy is felt in the pulses. Pulse reading is an art in and of itself; it takes many years to accurately read the hundreds of pulses on the forearm. Most practitioners determine the dosha by counting up the answers on the multiple choice test, and asking a hundred or so more questions in addition to observations of the client. I want to emphasize that doshas are an observational tool, not a diagnosis of any human condition. It is used for discussion and to help clients understand how to approach nutritional and life-style issues.
Let me address Vata problems here as we Colorado is a Vata provoking climate. Do you ever feel like your skin has become part of the reptile family? High altitude, dry air, windy, sunny days are all Vata provoking ingredients. Some people help balance these conditions with the consumption of organic oils inside the body and oiling the body on the outside. Sesame oil is great if you are always feeling cold. Buy the unrefined, dark kind of oil. Dark sesame oil has more oxygen and minerals in it; please keep the minerals in. One teaspoon a meal will help your digestion warm up and your elimination to act more efficiently. Vata energy runs in a cold dry digestive system, sesame oil will warm the digestion and help with dry hard stool. Do you always feel hot? Are your hands moist and warm all the time? These can be interpreted as a Pitta sign. Does your partner call you the furnace when you sleep together? Try unrefined coconut oil, 1/2 teaspoon to 1 teaspoon a meal to cool the digestion down. Slow the oil consumption down if the stool becomes too soft.
As we age our bodies requires more quality oil. And no, I am not talking about french fries! Be kind to your body and oil it regularly. After you take a shower, warm up some grapeseed, almond or olive oil in hot water (please do not use a microwave oven as this destroys the life giving force in the oil). Apply the warm oil liberally to your legs, arms, and chest. Try a variety of oils and include avocado, olive, almond, sesame, and coconut. Please do not use canola oil. It is not even food, it was actually originally manufactured for use in car engines.
Do not be seduced to buy the cheap body lotions with their promise of eternal youth and glowing moisture. Do not put anything on your body that uses 4 capital letters for an ingredient that is unpronounceable. Give your body a chance to be the best that it can be. No more chemicals please!
